Major Eppa Hunton was an officer in the War of 1812. He was First Lieutenant of Captain William R. Smith's Troop of Cavalry, from Fauquier County, attached to the command of Major Thomas Hunton, Virginia Militia, (records of the Adjutant General, U. S. Army). He was at the battles of Craney Island and Bladensburg.

He was father of Gen Eppa Hunton, Confederate General during the Civil War and later Commonwealth Attorney and Congressman (House and Senate) from Virginia.

He owned several properties, including Springfield and Mount Hope in Fauquier County and another farm in Prince William County.
