Verna A. Bax Andrews, 89, formerly of Girard, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at St. Vincent Health Center. She was born on January 21, 1916, in North Girard(now Lake City), daughter of the late Rollie and Margaret Gable Bax. Verna was raised and educated in the Girard area, graduating from the Rice Avenue Union High School in 1933. While in school she was active in many of the high school athletic programs and was well known for her ability playing basketball. She was known as a woman of faith, and she made family her priority throughout her life. She was considered a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Verna was an active member of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Girard, and she was active in horse clubs in her younger years. She was preceded in death by her husband James A. Andrews whom she married in 1935 in Ripley, N.Y., and also by two brothers, Ralph and Glenn Bax. Verna is survived by a daughter, Rita Andrews Bell of North Collins, N.Y.; a grandson, David Bell and his wife Stacey of Girard; three great grandchildren, James, Kathryn and Michael Bell all of Girard; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Saturday from 12:00 noon to the time of services at 2 p.m. at the Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard, Independent Care Group affiliate. Rev. Marty Critchfield, Pastor of Bethel Assembly of God Church, Girard, officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Bethel Assembly of God Church, 1414 Lake St., Girard, PA 16417.
