William John Cameron was the son of Thomas A. Cameron and his first wife, Nannie Paralee Lever. The 1880 census, taken in June, shows William at 9 years old and that would make him born in 1871 if his birthday was in May. His mother died by 1870s and he and his siblings were distributed to her Lever relatives. He later joined his father in Texas and enlisted in the Army. He spent his career in the military and did not marry. He later lived in Marion County, Indiana. The funeral home that handled his arrangements said a nonrelative was the informant for his vital information. His birthdate was given as May 15, 1865 and on the occasion of his 100th birthday, President Lyndon Johnson sent him a congratulatory message. However the Social Security Death Index lists the only William Cameron who died in June 1966 in Marion County as being born May 15, 1875. Each time he re-enlisted in the Army, William's birthyear became younger and younger.
