Charles Raymond McCarren, Jr., 88, of Butler died Monday evening surrounded by his loving family at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Charles was born Aug. 17, 1924, a son of the late Charles R. McCarren, Sr. and Harriet M. Keasey McCarren.
He was a 1942 graduate of Butler High School, and had attended John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio.
A decorated veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a B-17 bombardier. Despite being shot down, he returned safely to his family.
In 1949, he married Millicent Joanne West. Following her death in 1962, Charlie along with the help of Helen Guadino, and her daughters, Dolly and Donna, raised their seven children.
Charlie was co-owner of McCarren's Clothing Store in Butler, along with his brother Pat. A devoted Catholic, he was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Butler, and he would attend daily masses. He was a member Butler Country Club, where he was an avid golfer, and also was an active member of the Butler Elks. He was respected and deeply loved and will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
Surviving are his wife, Marilyn (Duffy) McCarren, who he married in 1974.
He is survived by his children, Charles (Jeanne) McCarren, III, Michael (Linda) McCarren, Patricia (David) Stein, Mary Turnbell and Millicent (Charles) Stawinski; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Jean Schaffner.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Frederick and David McCarren; one sister, Mary Irene Duffy; and one brother, Patrick McCarren.
MCCARREN - Friends of Charles Raymond McCarren, who died Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, will be received at Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St., Butler. The Rev. Harry Bielewicz, pastor, will officiate.
Internment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Butler.
