NOT DEAD BUT SLEEPING NIGHT CAME RELEAVING THEM FROM LABOR----WHEN A HAND FROM OUT OF DARKNESS TOUCHED THEM AND THEY SLEPT.

Jeremiah Stern, of Kutztown, died of apoplexy on Thursday at 1:50 p. m.. aged 75 years and 4 days. On March 14, 1908, he received his first stroke, which paralyzed his entire left side, and this left him in a somewhat helpless condition. His children however, attended to all his wants, thus making his remaining days on this earth as cheerful as possible.
Two weeks ago the venerable gentleman was again stricken, which rendered him completely helpless.

He was the son of John Stern and his wife, Judith (nee Heist) Stern, and was born in Rockland Township February 28, 1834. Deceased was a man of excellent habits, fine moral character and sturdy constitution, and he continued to be active in his accustomed pursuits till long past the age at which men ordinarily drop out of the ranks of the workers. To this end there is no doubt that his sunshiny disposition largely contributed.
He was a practical, matter-of-fact man, but had his own peculiar way of exacting merriment from life as it went along, and he was not disposed to worry about matters that could be bettered in other ways.

In his youth, Mr. Stern had a desire to become a miller by trade and followed his chosen profession until he found that his health would not permit him to engage in this line of work, after which he took to farming.
For 30 years he worked faithfully for Jonathan Bieber, after which he started out for himself. For nine years he successfully carried on farming, after which, for seven years, he operated the stone quarry in Maxatawny Township, now owned by Sell D. Kutz.
After Mr. Stern relinquished the stone quarry business, he was for 11 years(in fact up to the time of his sickness) employed by the Kutztown Foundry and Machine Company as a day laborer.

His wife, Mary (nee Schuker), died 20 years ago. Also an infant daughter preceded the father and mother in death many years ago. The surviving children are: John, Allen, Misses Amanda C. and Lizzie, of Kutztown; Jonas and Solon of Reading. These brothers and sisters also remain: John Stern, Rockland; George, Reading; Benneville, Mrs. Wilson Kuhnsman, and Mrs. Martin Althouse, of South Bethlehem. Another sister, Mrs. Mahlon Deisher, died only a few months ago.

Deceased was a good neighbor and there was no happier family circle than his. His best moment will be the good record which he has left behind him in this community, in which he has lived for 75 years.

Mr. Stern was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and lived a pure and honorable life. There was a daily beauty about his life which won every heart. On temperament he was a mild, conciliatory and candid, and yet remarkable for an uncompromising firmness. He gained confidence when he seemed least to need it.

His funeral will be held on next Tuesday, at 1:30 p. m. from his late residence, Rev. J. J. Cressman will officiate. Services will be held at the house. Interment in Hope Cemetery. Undertaker J. H. Stump has charge. All relatives and friends are invited to attend with out further notice.
