Carterville - Nellie Gertrude Hunter, 98, of Carterville, died Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at Carbondale Rehab and Nursing Center, surrounded by her family. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville. Graveside services will follow at 3:00 p.m., in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville, with the Rev. Richard Reed officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Grand Avenue Baptist Church, 116 W. Grand Avenue, Carterville, IL 62918. Nellie was born March 7, 1914, in Vergennes to George Painter and Nellie Grace (Jacobs) Boyer. She married Edwin Charles Hunter on September 24, 1933, in Murphysboro; he preceded her in death on May 19, 1969. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Richard and Mary Hunter of Greenfield, Wisc. and Henry Hunter of Murphysboro; daughters and son-in-law, Barbara Hunter of Carterville and Nellie Jane and Bryan Hofmann of Mansfield, Tex.; nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren. Nellie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Charles Hunter; sisters, Lela Williams and Clara Allard; brothers, Loraine, Garnet, Haskell, Eldron, and Ernie Boyer; grandchildren, Charles Hunter Jr., Donna Kay Hunter and Mike Hunter; and great-grandson, Charles Anthony Campbell. She worked as a cook at the Carterville Grade School from 1967 to 1976. Nellie later worked for Brown Shoe Factory in Murphysboro. Nellie was a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Carterville. She was also a member of the Carterville Senior Citizens where she played in the kitchen band. Nellie was quite active throughout her life. She delivered Meals on Wheels up until she was 96 years old. Nellie enjoyed playing the game, "Ten Thousand" and eating at the Country Cupboard in Carterville.
