Rev. Delmer (Del) Dolton
October 31, 1919-December 25, 2007

Rev. Delmer Irvin Dolton, age 88, was called home to his Lord on December 25, 2007 following an extended illness. Born in Enid, Oklahoma on October 31, 1919, he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He met his life-long partner in ministry, Rose Sprain, when they attended Texas Lutheran College from1937-39. He completed his Bachelor's degree at Wittenberg College in Springfield, OH, and then prepared for the ministry at Philadelphia Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. Del and Rose were married August 20, 1943; he was ordained June 4, 1944. For 40 years, he served Lutheran churches in the Texas cities of Goliad, Colettoville, Harlingen, Houston and Yoakum. He founded St. James Lutheran Church in Houston. He served Holy Cross Lutheran in Yoakum for 26 years prior to retirement in 1984. After moving to Brenham, TX, he continued to lead worship services in Lutheran and Methodist congregations in the area. In 1971 he began a Dial-A-Prayer phone ministry in Yoakum along with a Dial-A-Story phone line for children. He continued this ministry in Brenham.

Del was known for his quick wit and humor, deep spirituality and love for all people with whom he came into contact. He is survived by two sons, David Dolton and wife Linda, of Lakewood, CO and Barry Dolton and wife Rosanne of The Woodlands; and one daughter, Janet Porras and husband Peter of Mesquite, TX; three grandsons, Daniel, Derek and Jonathan; one brother, Robert Dolton and wife Jeanne of Dallas, TX; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday, December 28, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham, TX.
