Delmar's father (Dale's) job was delivering mail with his boat in the Florida Key's. On the 10th of July 1907, Dale took his two boys with him. Something happened to the motor of the boat. Dale told Delmar and Hal to sit still while he checked on the motor. Boys being boys; they were up moving around on the boat and Delmar fell over board. Dale jumped in to try and save his son. He managed once to grab his hand but couldn't hold on to him. He kept going back down in the water looking for his son but never found him. Dale had to go home and tell his pregnant wife that their son was gone; lost in the Gulf of Mexico.
