Earl Lee Comer was a cousin of Texas author Robert E. Howard. Shortly after Earl's birth, his parents split up. Earl and his mother ended up in Big Spring, Texas, sometime before 1910; Earl's father remained in Saint Louis. In 1911, Earl was a member of the so-called "oldest Boy Scout troop in Texas," which began in Big Spring in 1911. Following the 1915 death of his mother, Earl went to live with Robert E. Howard's family in Cross Plains, Texas. In 1918 he joined the US Navy and in 1920 trained as a draftsman in Wisconsin. He returned to Cross Plains in 1921, briefly, before going to Dallas. Around 1924, he lived in Los Angeles, CA, for a couple of years, but was back in Dallas by 1928 working as a draftsman. He had a short-lived marriage in the 1930s, but died alone in Galveston, Texas, where he was a retired draftsman for the U.S. Bureau of Mines.
