Mr. O'Donnell's J.D. and LL.M. were from Georgetown University Law Center ('56 and '57). He graduated from Villanova University (A.B., 1953) and Georgetown Prep. He clerked in the U.S. District Court for the former Chief Judge Matthew F. McGuire before serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for D.C. In 1961, he entered private practice with the firm that became Thompson, O'Donnell, LLP. He was a member of the Bars of D.C. and Maryland and was admitted to practice in the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and the U.S. District Courts for D.C. and Maryland.
He was the son of Dr. William F. O'DONNELL and Gertrude LANE. He married Mary Anne SCHREIER in 1955. He was survived by his wife, two sons, four daughters, and 13 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and by nine siblings: The Rev. Msgr. William Francis O'Donnell, Dr. Vincent Lane O'Donnell, Dr. Robert Joseph O'Donnell, Jeanne Marie (Mrs. William) Rapp, Thomas Lane O'Donnell (infant), The Rev. James Jeremiah O'Donnell, Hugh Lowe O'Donnell, Paul Anthony Casimir O'Donnell, and Mary Frances O'Donnell (infant).
Funeral mass was at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Church, Bethesda, Maryland. Arrangements were by DeVol's Funeral Home, Washington, D.C. Obituary was published in the Washington Post, February 25 and 26, 2013.
