MATTHEWS-In Eureka, June 8, 1898. Aulay Matthews, father of the late Peter Matthews, a native of Prince Edwards Island, aged 82 years. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral Friday, June 10, 1898, at 2 p m, from the residence of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Sadie Matthews, No 1609 Fifth street. Interment Myrtle Grove Cemetery.

Death of A. Matthews.

At the ripe old age of 82 years, and in the consciousness of a life well spent, Aulay Matthews, father of the late Peter Matthews, passed away at 3 o'clock yesterday morning at the residence of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Sadie Matthews, after a brief illness. He was taken down a few days ago with an attack of asthma, but no apprehension was had that the attack would prove serious, as he had been thus afflicted before at intervals. Tuesday he slept all day, and on the evening of that day his daughter-in-law summoned his physician, who pronounced the patient to be in a critical condition. Efforts were made to arouse him from his slumber, but to no avail. He continued his sleep until 3 o'clock yesterday morning, when he quietly and peacefully passed away, as easily and pleasantly as the last low, sweet whisper of a dying zephyr, and a good man's soul went to its eternal reward. Aulay Matthews was a native of Prince Edward Island, aged 83 years, and has been a resident of this city for twelve years past. He was a widower, his wife having died fifteen years ago. He leaves four sons and a daughter in the East to mourn his loss—Malcolm, Aulay and Clinton, who reside in Maine, and Archie and Mary J., who are residents of Prince Edward Island. He was a kind, benevolent man, and will be missed by all who knew him and were familiar with his many good qualities. Especially will he be missed by the little children in the neighborhood where he lived, to all of whom he was "Grandpa, " and many a little one will look in vain for the familiar figure of the good old man who always had a pleasant word and a gentle pat on the bead for them. The funeral will take place from the family residence, 1609 Fifth street, to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Peace to his ashes.
