John J. Sovak, 81, of Stroudsburg, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, in the Laurel Manor Nursing Home, Stroudsburg. He was the widower of Shirley J. (Smith) Sovak, who died just two months ago, Dec. 18, 1998.

Born in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Paul and Virginia (Kovacs) Sovak. He had lived in the Stroudsburg area for the past 30 years, and prior to that lived in various areas throughout the country, during his 25 years serving in the military. John was a retired master sergeant He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam.

He was a member of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg and a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels of Monroe County. He was also a charter member of the Antoine Dutot Museum and Gallery of Delaware Water Gap.

In John's retirement years he enjoyed collecting and repairing clocks of all types.

He is survived by a daughter, Amy Nese of Bethlehem; a son, John (Jack) J. Sovak Jr. of Ellenville, N.Y.; a sister, Anna Long of Frederick, Md.; six grandchildren: Laura, Christine, William, Jean, Jennifer, and JoAnn; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
