Teacher, clerk, hardware manufacturer. Husband of Julia Ann Upson. They had four children. Early in the history of the Anti-Slavery agitation the Curtisses became ardent adherents of that cause and gave to it freely of their time and substance, frequently suffering serious loss in the consequence. Their home was a station of the "Underground Railway" and many fugitives passed through it on their way to freedom.
