Found in The State 26 October 1954: Mrs. Ellie Wilson Sloan, 88, one of the oldest nurses in Columbia who was one of the six nurses taken from the State Hospital staff to start the nursing staff at the Columbia Hospital, died at 6 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Columbia Hospital. She had been in declining health for the past five years. Mrs. Sloan was born July 5, 1866, the daughter of Frances A. and Sarah Boyd Wilson of Abbeville County. She had lived most of her life in Columbia. She joined the Columbia Hospital nursing staff following the hospital's establishment in 1892 by the King's Daughters. She was a widow of the late D. B. Sloan, for many years sergeant in the Columbia Police Department who died in 1929. Mrs. Sloan was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Gussie W. Miller of Columbia and Mrs. S. A. Allen of Abbeville, one brother, W. H. Wilson of Jacksonville, Fla.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Ada Sloan Gilmer, and Miss Frances Sloan, both of Columbia, and five step-grandchildren, Mrs. R. E. Craig, Miss Marguerite Lynch, Mrs. W. S. Brooks, all of Columbia; B. D. Sloan, Jacksonville, Fla.; Mrs. F. C. Davant of Miami, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews among whom are Mrs. J. R. Boozer, Mrs. J. R. Mims, Mrs. D. M. Watts, Mrs. Cliff Stallings, L. B. Wilson, J. B. Wilson, all of Columbia.
