Funeral services for William R. Bowman 93, the oldest native of Harrisonburg, who served as city sergeant for some years and widely known throughout this section as an auctioneer, will be held at the grave in Woodbine Cemetery at 10:30 this morning, Dr. K.K. Haddaway officiating.
The aged man who often told friends that he was the oldest living born in Harrisonburg and spending his entire life here, died at Rockingham Memorial Hospital Tuesday evening following burns suffered a week earlier at a nursing home in Grottoes.
Mr. Bowman had been in feeble health for 10 years or more. He appeared in his usual condition until his bed caught fire and he suffered severe burns.
He numbered his friends by the hundreds in the Harrisonburg community and until his condition became feeble, he liked to tell of evenings in earlier days of Harrisonburg.
Born before the war between the states, he recounted boyhood recollections in Harrisonburg. He lived to see the small town advance into a thriving city.
He was one of the veteran firefighters and was active for years. He was a carpenter and in his early years followed in his father's footsteps as an auctioneer.
Mr. Bowman was later in the business with his son, Brent Bowman, and they sold real estate and other sales over a wide area.
Mr. Bowman was the son of Samuel and Elizah Costler Bowman. He attended school here and had been a member of the Methodist Church since youth.
He is survived by one son, Brent F. Bowman of Washington, and one sister, Mrs. Luella Billhimer of Gathersburg, Md. Three grandchildren also survive.
The body will remain at the Linsey Funeral Home on S. Main St. until 10:15 this morning when it will be taken to the cemetery, where friends are asked to meet.
