HAYES — Patricia Crosland Manchester, age 84, died Dec. 28, 1999, at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital. Pat was among the first women in the Marine Corps, having served in World War II from 1942 to 1945. She was a member of Abingdon Episcopal Church and served as the church secretary for 10 years. She was also on the Board of the Middle Peninsula Community Concert, a volunteer at the Gloucester Library and a board member of the Long Bridge Ordinary Foundation.
Survivors include her husband, retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Benjamin B. Manchester III; and daughter, Susan M. Freeman, and her husband, Barry. Funeral services was held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Abingdon Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Theodore Haddix Jr. Interment followed in the church cemetery. In Pat's memory, memorial contributions may be made to Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061; or Abingdon Volunteer Rescue Squad, Box 247, Gloucester Point, VA 23062; or Abingdon Episcopal Church, Attention: Land Acquisition Fund, Box 82, White Marsh, VA 23183.
