Charles Curtin was born 12 Dec 1839 in Brosna, Kerry, Ireland. His mother's maiden name was Esther Cronin. Charles Curtin had never attended school and he could not read or write. Family lore is that Charles Curtin and brother Thomas Curtin were eligible to be drafted into the English army, so they walked to the nearest seaport and boarded a sailing vessel to Baltimore, MD. The voyage took several weeks and arrived in the U.S. in 1864. He was married to Mary T. O'Connell on 6 Aug. 1865 at St. Aloysius Church in Washington, DC. It was there that he watched President Lincoln's funeral train pass by.
He eventually relocated to Preble, Cortland, NY to a farm adjacent to Song Mountain. His daughter Ellen "Nellie" and husband Neil Casey worked the Curtin Farm until 1915. They had purchased the Apulia Farm the fall before, so Charles Curtin sold his farm and moved in with them. His gravestone reads "1840-1928", but his death certificate reads "12 December 1839 - 2 July 1929."
