Louis Alexander Richardson, the son of Lewis Ball Richardson and Mary Ann "Polly" (Snow) Richardson, was born November 25, 1844 in Auburn, Sangamon County, Illinois.

After completing his education in the Auburn schools, Louis Richardson studied at the Athens Seminary. After completing his studies at the Athens Seminary he attended The Bryant and Stratton Mercantile College. The Bryant and Stratton Mercantile College was founded by H. B. Bryant and his brother-in-law H.D. Stratton first in Cleveland, Ohio in 1852 and expanded into a chain of schools with locations across the United States, including Chicago, Illinois.

On May 25, 1869, Louis Richardson married Julia Eliza Spies, the daughter of Jacob Spies and Katharine (Kaufmann) Spies, in Marine, Madison County, Illinois. Two daughters were born to this union:

Olivia Richardson
and Hattie Richardson

Louis and Julia made their home in Marine, Illinois. In 1871, Louis Richardson opened a pharmacy in town. According to the Marine Historical Society, Louis built a structure for his drugstore in 1878 on North Duncan Street across from the Marine Park in the center of the village. He operated his drug store in the Village of Marine until his death in 1932.

In October 1895, Louis's wife Julia (Spies) Richardson died of cancer at the age of 49. After a period of morning Louis Richardson found love a second time.

On April 14, 1897, Louis Richardson married Mary Ella Pence, the daughter of George Simon Pence and Margaret Jane (Kepler) Pence, in Sangamon County, Illinois. Two children were born to this union:

Helen Mildred Richardson
and Louis Alexander Richardson, Jr.

The family lived on Division Street in Marine, Illinois. According to his son, Louis Richardson served as the first principal of the Marine Public School in Marine, Illinois.

Louis Alexander Richardson died at his home in Marine, Madison County, Illinois on September 19, 1932 after having been in poor health the last two years. Funeral services were held on September 22, 1932 at his home and then the Christian Church in Marine, Illinois. He was buried in the Jacob Spies Family section in the Marine City Cemetery on January 10, 1918.
