William Nathan MANNING, Sr. (known as "Willie") was first married to Sadie RIGSBY for a short period around 1920 and they did not have any children together. That marriage quickly ended in a divorce.

On Oct. 29,1927 he married Emily MAY in Alabama and they had nine children together.

He was a photographer all of his professional life. He started out working as a photographer in Tallassee, Elmore County, Alabama. In 1929, he started has his own business (Manning's Photo Studio), which was located above Toomer's Drug Store on the main corner across from Auburn University in Auburn, Lee County, Alabama.

In the early 1930's he also participated in the HABS program by taking photos and documenting old historic homes all across Alabama. Many of his photos can still be seen today through historical archives and books, which credit him as being the photographer.

He took many photos documenting the people and buildings of the Auburn, Lee County, Alabama area from the 1930's until his retirement in 1969. Just before he retired, someone from Auburn University came to visit him at his photo studio. The result of that meeting was that he donated the photos that are today known as the "Manning Photo Collection" at Auburn University.

Willie and Emily MANNING lived and raised their family of nine children at 434 Dumas Drive in Auburn, Lee County, Alabama. Their land adjoined Auburn High School, which later became Auburn Junior High School. When William Nathan MANNING, Sr. retired in 1969, he sold his land to the Lee County, Alabama school system, and one of his sons had the original house professionally moved to Opelika, Lee County, Alabama.

After Willie and Emily MANNING sold their house in Auburn, Lee County, Alabama, they retired to East Tallassee, Tallapoosa County, Alabama. They lived there until their deaths and are both buried next to each other in Rose Hill Cemetery in Tallassee, Elmore County, Alabama. Their infant grandson, Mark Stephen MANNING is buried to their right, in between them and Willie's parents, James Houston MANNING and Estella LEDBETTER.
