Daniel Tyler was born November 23, 1816 at Simpronius, New York. His parents were Andrew and Elizabeth Cornins Tyler. From early childhood Daniel was quite religiously inclined and, when Elder Hyrum Smith came into the Tyler neighborhood in December, 1832, all the members of the Tyler families were converted. Daniel was baptized the following winter.
In 1836 he met Ruth Welton, a member of the Church, and on the 11th day of September they were married. Shortly after they left with other Saints for Nauvoo. When the government called for men to fight Mexico, Daniel joined the famed Mormon Battalion Company "C," 4th Corporal, leaving his family at Winter Quarters, where his wife gave birth to a daughter the next January 28th. During his stay with the Battalion he compiled a diary of his experiences and later incorporated them into a book published under the title of "The History of the Mormon Battalion in the Mexican War".
Returning with the remnants of the Battalion, Daniel arrived in Salt Lake Valley October 16, 1847, bringing with him the first pea seed from California. From there he continued on to Winter Quarters arriving there in the late winter and, the following summer, with his family, joined the Amasa Lyman company westward. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on November 18, 1848.
His life was spent doing the Lord's work here on earth. On his missions abroad he was called upon to take charge of the Swiss, Italian, French and German missions for a time. Upon his return to Utah he held many high positions in Church and civic affairs. He was ordained a Patriarch by Apostle George A. Smith December 10, 1873.
Sgt. Tyler passed away in Beaver, Utah November 7, 1906, just a few days before his 90th birthday. His actions and his words inspired all who knew him to seek knowledge and truth and ever to adhere to it.
