Edward J. Gerdts, 85, Dies Sunday
Edward J. Gerdts, 85-year-old Waseca resident, died at 10:30 Sunday morning at Memorial hospital where he had been a patient for the past seven weeks. His health had been failing for some time, with death attributed to complications of advanced age.
Born February 6, 1868, near Madison, Wis., Edward J. Gerdts was one of a family of 11 children born to Edward and Minnie Gerdts. When he was two years of age, the family moved to a farm near Alma City. He received his education in the rural schools. During his youth, he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and held membership in St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Waseca, at the time of his death.
On September 20, 1899, Mr. Gerdts was united in marriage to Mary Wagner. They observed their 53rd wedding anniversary last year. After farming near Alma City, they moved to their property which is now the airport, near the south end of town. After living there for 17 years, they moved to Waseca where they have resided for 33 years. Their home is located on 4th Ave. N. W.
Mr. And Mrs. Gerdts had one son who died in infancy.
Surviving with his wife, and one brother, Otto Gerdts of Iosco township and two sisters, Mrs. William Kelling (Nanny) and Mrs. Ed Kelling (Olga) both of the Waldorf community.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, with a family service at the Pfaff chapel at 11:00 a.m., followed by a 2 o’clock service at St. Paul’s Lutheran church. In the absence of Rev. E. H. Eifert, Rev. G. W. Malling, pastor of Trinity Lutheran church of Wilton, will officiate. Six nephews will serve as pall bearers. Interment will be in Woodville cemetery.
