She was Professor Emerita from Mississippi State University, having served as Librarian at Mitchell Memorial Library for most of her career. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the Wesley Sunday School Class. She was a graduate of M.S.C.W. and received her Master's Degree from Mississippi State University.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert R. Barwick and Julia Louise Turman.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Guyton, of Starkville, Miss.; son, Raymond Downey, of Liberty, Mo.; and daughter, Marcia Thomas, of Florence, Ala.; five grandchildren, John Barwick Guyton, Mary Connor Guyton, Katelynn Frances Downey, Lindsey Clare Downey and Callie Ann Thomas; and sisters, Martha Irby and Ann O'Reilly, both of Starkville, Miss.
