WELLS, Maine - Matthew J. Flaherty, 86, of Wells, Maine, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. He was born in Portland, on Jan. 29, 1918, a son of Mark and Ann (Welch) Flaherty.

He graduated from Deering High School in Portland in 1937. While there, he excelled in football, basketball, and track and field. This athletic prowess continued at the University of New Hampshire, resulting in three letters in each sport. He was a national level hammer thrower and was inducted into the UNH Hall of Fame. As a World War II veteran, he served in Germany and Italy.

He had a farm in Dover, N.H., and taught biology at Dover High School. There, he was also a coach for 15 years, where he led the basketball team to the state title in 1942. For the next 23 years, he was a high school principal in Alton, N.H., South Berwick and Wells. He was known for his leadership in education and his innovative approach to teaching.

Above all else, he is remembered for his kindness and the respect he gave to all individuals. His daily actions supported his integrity, family values, and unwavering honesty. He found the goodness in all people and was known as a champion of the underdog.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Kathleen Ahern; his parents; and three sisters, Dorothy MacLean, Rete Bonner, and Eileen Leach.

He is survived by his wife, Helen H. Flaherty of Wells; daughters, Kathleen Davidson and her husband, Dr. Robin, of Clinton, Mass., Luanne Dadura and her husband, Edward, of Mooresville, N.C., Mary Eisenhard and her husband, John, of Pavilion, N.Y., and Dorothy Saucier and her husband, David, of Old Town; stepchildren, Georgia Rencher and her husband, Frank, of Kooskia, Idaho; Alan White and his wife, Jeanette, of Anchorage, Alaska; and David White and his wife, Cynthia, of Sandwich, N.H. He is also survived by five sisters, Adelaide Luttrell, Agnes Flaherty, Helen Vankevich, Mary Nelson, Katherine Massell; and one brother, Edward Flaherty; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, in Wells, Maine. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 236 Eldridge Road, in Wells with Father Joseph Ford.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland, Maine on Friday, December 3 at 11 a.m.
