Services for MRS. MATTIE OVERTON MEADOWS were conducted this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at Lanler Funeral Home chapel by Dr. H. H. Boston, interim pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial was in Ridgecrest Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roy Hall, Glen Dillon, Elton Cawthon, A. P. Reasonover, Homer Waldrop and Hunt Maddox. Mrs. Meadows, who resided at 583 East Main, passed away on Wednesday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. at the Heidelburg Nursing Home. She had been ill for a month. She was 89.
She was born at Cloverport on March 6, 1868. Her parents were the late Andrew and Martha Jane Anderson Overton. After completing her education in the public schools in Hardeman County, she continued her studies at George Peabody College. For four years she taught in the West Jackson Elementary Schools. She then moved to Dyersburg where she taught until her marriage on Aug. 16, 1898 to Henry L. Meadows. Following marriage she moved to Bradford where Mr. Meadows operated a general merchandise store. All her life she was active in Parent-Teacher Association work and various civic affairs. For a number of years she was a Sunday School teacher. In 1934 she moved to Jackson. Mr. Meadows died in 1936. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Fannie Savage Sunday School Class and Women's Missionary Society.
She is survived by one son, Paul Meadows of Jackson, a granddaughter, Mrs. W. H. Reed of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. ~~~ THE JACKSON SUN, Jackson, TN, July 18, 1957, page 3
