Claxton - Alton James "Dick" Bowen, 83, died Sunday August 15, 2004 at his residence in Claxton surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Tattnall County on April 9, 1921 to William W. and Maggie Holland Bowen. Alton was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Coast Guard. He retired from Continental Can Company in 1982 as manager of the supply room. He was a former member and Deacon at Dean Forest Baptist Church and a former member of Claxton Church of God.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline Harley Bowen of Claxton, GA; three sons, Alton J. Bowen Jr. of Milledgeville, GA, Larry E. Bowen of Savannah, GA and Kenneth Bowen of Collins, GA; one daughter, Sandra K. Rayburn of Atlanta, GA; three brothers, Lehman W. Bowen, (Merle Sapp) of Savannah, Clifford J. Bowen (Carolyn White) of Savannah and H. Grady Bowen of Claxton, GA; one sister, Louise B. Hickman of Livingston, TX.

Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home with burial at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
