Reuben married Mary Ann Phillips on 29 January 1863 in Richland County, Ohio. They had Orion, Emma, and Lewis. He was a farmer and the son of Sylvester and Mary Etta Caswell Abbott with siblings: Elizabeth, Melvin, George, Sarah, Alice,and Lewis. Reuben was the eldest. His grandmother, Clarissa Abbott, was living with them in 1860.
