Charles Leo Phillippe Altair, Carmel resident, perfume manufacturer and well known wine chemist, died yesterday morning shortly after he was admitted to a local hospital. He had been ill approximately two weeks. Mr. Altair, a native of Routers, Belgium, was born Dec. 19, 1883. He came to the United States and became a naturalized citizen in 1922. A resident of California for the past 40 years he made his home in Hollywood and in Hollister and has lived in Carmel for the past 25 years. While on the Peninsula he was engaged in perfume manufacturing at Nicole Altair Inc. for 13 years. He was a well known wine consultant and chemist with his own business in Belgium before coming to the U.S. For several years he worked as a consultant chemist at the Hiram Walker distillers in Hollister. Mr. Altair was awarded the first gold medal at the California State Fair in 1949 for research in sweet and dry vermouth. Survivors include his wife, Nicole Altair of Carmel, son Max of Los Angeles and daughter Mrs. Nicole Beaudin of Carmel. Private services were held today at The Paul Mortuary with the Rev. Felix Migliazzo officiating. Inurnment followed at the Little Chapel by-the-Sea. Memorial contributions are asked for the American Cancer Research Fund, Monterey.
