Leonard was born to Eligah E. Freeman and Laura Belle Eminiser Freeman. The Kentucky Birth Index shows his birth as 2/11/1913.

Leonard received his middle name of "Eligah" in honor of his father's first name.

Leonard grew up on his parents' farm near Waynoka, (Woods County) Oklahoma.

Leonard and Jewel Ruth Banister Thornton Freeman were married in 1949. Ruth brought two children to their marriage and then she and Leonard became the parents of two more sons after their marriage. Their four children are J. Arnold Freeman, Bonnie Freeman Jones, L. DeWayne Freeman & Tommy J. Freeman

Leonard had four brothers: A.C. (Also known as Arthur Clint Freeman) (1902-1969), Clarence "Candy" Freeman (1904-1977), Charles Taylor "Taylor" Freeman (1915-1966), and Buzz Freeman (1924-1973)
