Edward Goettel, Ex-Athlete, Dies

Edward G. Goettel, 78, of 207 Hastings Pl., died unexpectedly at his home yesterday. He was a former baseball player and groundskeeper for 21 years at MacArthur Stadium, before retiring in 1954. In 1934, when the stadium was under construction, he was working for the City of Syracuse; and his crew sodded the original infield. He was an active player for 10 years before a bad arm forced him to retire. He was a groundskeeper for the Chiefs. A native of Syracuse, Mr. Goettel was a member of Salt Springs Lodge 520 of the Free and Accepted Masons for more than 50 years and a member of the Pastime Athletic Club for more than 60 years. He was also a member of Keder Kahn Grotto. Surviving are a brother, Charles Goettel, and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Welter Funeral Home, 2649 James St., the Rev. John Perl of Friedens United Church officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.
