Enlisted on 3/15/1862 at Catawba County, NC, he was mustered into "C" Co. NC 28th Infantry as a Private.
POW 5/27/1862 Hanover Court House, VA.; confined Fort Monroe, VA.; transferred 6/1862 Fort Columbus, NY; paroled 7/12/1862 Fort Columbus, NY; transferred 7/12/1862 Aiken's Landing, VA; exchanged 8/5/1862 Aiken's Landing, VA; returned to duty 11/1/1862.
Promoted to 3rd Sergt 1/1/1863.
On 3/21/1863 reduced to ranks, Private, and transferred into "K" Co. NC 23rd Infantry to serve with his brother and a cousin.
Wounded in the back by gunshot and POW, 7/1/1863 Gettysburg, PA; sent 7/2/1863 to Fort Delaware, DE; paroled and transferred 7/31/1863 to City Point, VA.; received for exchange and hospitalized in Petersburg, VA C.S.A. Hospital for his wound 8/1/1863; returned to duty 8/22/1863.
He was Killed In Action in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA.

The 23rd North Carolina Infantry Regiment, formerly the 13th Volunteers, was organized at Weldon, North Carolina, in July, 1861. Its members were raised in the counties of Anson, Lincoln, Montgomery, Richmond, Granville, Catawba, and Gaston.
