Rev. Ernst was graduated from Cathage College with a Master of Arts degree in 1896, but he had already been graduated in 1892 from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. He was ordained to Presbyterian ministry in 1892 by the Presbytery of Niobrara (in northeast Nebraska), after which he served a Nebraska congregation until 1895. From there he went on to pastor the Presbyterian congregation in Carroll, Iowa (1895-1898). And then he moved to Macomb, Illinois.
