The four children of John and Stella had a sad and difficult childhood after the death of their mother in Feb, 1909. At the ages of 9, 7, 5, 3, they were treated harshly by the people who were supposed to be caring for them. Times were tough for many families at this period in our country. Barney, like his siblings, was a bright child. He was able to complete his elementary education up to the sixth grade.
According to family members, Bernard was able to get into the navy in 1920, by saying he was older than age 17. There is a form indicating Bernard registered for the armed services on 19 Feb, 1942. In Oct, 1942, we find this: "Private, Muster Date, Oct 1942, Station, Tenth Recruit Battalion, Recruiti Depot, Mb, Parris Island, S. C."
Barney had just married Lillian Brazil in Jan, 1941 and they had their first child. A family member has indicated that Lillian would not let Barney go back into the service. Barney and Lillian eventually had a total of six children, (five boys and one girl), which included a set of twins.
Barney held a variety of jobs including working as a painter in 1935, selling insurance, and was self-employed as owner/operator of "Manhattan Sales" and "ALL Beverage Company Vending Machines".
Barney was a loving father, spouse, brother and grandfather. He died of cancer on 11 Nov, 1959 at age 56. His six children ranged in age from 4 to 18.
