Lucy Emma Barto was born to Joseph and Mary Ann Barto October 20, 1855 in Clarion County, Pennsylvania. She moved to Iowa with her parents in 1856, where she lived until she was married to John A. Ayers, thereafter moving to Illinois. In 1879 they came to Saunders County, Nebraska, where they resided until 1888. Then they went to Hebron, Nebraska, where the family was reared.

After Mr. Ayer's death she came to Beatrice in 1922 where she has since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. George Hess.

Mrs. Ayers is survived by two daughters and one son, namely: Mrs. Pearl Hess, Mrs. Minnie Sharock (sic), and Verne Ayers of Beatrice. Other survivors are two step-children, Mrs. Carrie Carter of Wood River, Nebraska, and Charles Ayers of Lincoln, Nebraska; also one sister, Mrs. Margaret Markley of Tuscon, Arizona---as well as a number of grand and great grandchildren. one son, Lloyd B. Ayers passed away at Hebron in 1940. His widow, Mayme F. Ayers, is also a survivor.

Funeral services were held at the Harmon-Johnson Funeral Home on Friday, May 15th. Reverend Wayne Greene of the First Christian church officiated. Mrs. Bernice Evans and M.O. Goble furnished the music. Pallbearers were relatives: Mr. George Hess, Ira Sharrock (sic), Verne Ayers, Gordon Ayers, Charles Ayers, and Ray Zehrung.
