Carmen Beuna Whitaker

Died: August 13, 2018; in Mercedes, TX

Carmen Beuna (Barham) Whitaker went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 13 after succumbing to endometrial cancer.

Born on November 25, 1934 in Johnston City, Illinois, she graduated from Lake View High School in Chicago, Illinois. She then worked at the First National Bank of Chicago and studied at Emmaus Bible School and Moody Bible Institute, both in Chicago, before earning a Bachelor and Master of Science in Education degrees from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. Carmen thereafter received an Advanced Certificate in Education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Finally, she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education and Phi Sigma Society for the promotion of research in the biological sciences.

Carmen taught math and science at Fox Hill Home for Unwed Mothers in Batavia, Illinois for two years; biology at West Aurora High School in Aurora, Illinois for 12 years; and biology at Alief-Clodine High School in Houston, Texas for 14 years. While retired in Mercedes, Texas, she taught GED courses and art classes. A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Weslaco, Texas, she served there as deacon, and served on missions in Belize and Mexico. An avid traveler, Carmen visited numerous countries, living for a short duration in Chad, Kenya, and Niger.

Carmen is predeceased by Timothy Edwin, beloved youngest son; Edwin Franklin, beloved husband of 52 years; Clara Barham Mifflin, beloved sister; and Lowell Dean Barham, beloved brother.

She is survived by sister, Phyliss Pigusch of Bradley, Illinois; sons, Eric Paul (d. Jonita) of Washington, DC and Craig Steven (Mary) of Warrenville, Illinois; grandchildren, Ginger Mahalia Paula (Michael Marks) Whitaker of College Park, Maryland and Jordan Philip Austin (Alexandra Willey) Whitaker of Fairfax, Virginia; step-grandson, Daniel Peterson of Anchorage, Alaska; and step-great grandchildren, Zoe, Ethan, and Leah Peterson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund in Weslaco, Texas or the American Cancer Society.

The memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 21 at the First Presbyterian Church in Weslaco, Texas. Interment will be private.
