Born on a farm near Cropsey, the middle child of five of Edward John and Rosa Ann Zahn Steinberg, she married John Theodore Gustav Gerken on Feb. 12, 1938. He died June 3, 1973. Her parents, one sister, Hazel Wisely, two brothers, Edward Adam and Ralph LeRoy Steinberg, and a grandson, Michael Gerken also died before her.

Surviving are four daughters, a son, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; a sister, Ruth Bernice Swaim of Monroe, WA and nine nieces.

Evelyn graduated from Cropsey High School in 1928 and from St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Bloomington, in 1931. She worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph's and in private duty until 1940 and also worked briefly at Fairbury Hospital in 1957. She and John farmed for Sibley Estates and then bought her family farm when her father died in 1951. They retired from farming in 1968 and moved to Gibson City.

She kept a garden and small orchard and harvested, preserved and shared her bounty until moving from her own home to Normal in 1996. She participated in exercise and art programs at Blair House in Normal until health problems forced her to the McLean Co. Nursing Home in 2003. She had been one of the exercise co-leaders at Blair House.

Evelyn was a member of Gibson City United Methodist church and of United Methodist Women. She was active Sunshine Sunday School Class and an office of Friendship Circle in Gibson City. She had taught in Sibley United Methodist and was an officer in Mel-Sib PTA from 1946-1968.

She greatly enjoyed Gibson Senior Citizens trips and joined a trip to Hawaii, at age 80, where she sturdily climbed a volcano saying that if you manage to get here, you might as well see all you can.
