Leon S. Gerdis passed away peacefully on February 11, 2013 at the age of 94. Leon was born in Reed, Oklahoma on November 30, 1918 the oldest child of Samuel and Gussie Gerdis. He was raised in Oklahoma along with his three siblings, Geraldine, Dorothy, and Harold Lloyd.
He met and married Frances Buczinski in Woodward, Oklahoma and during their 35 years marriage they raised two daughters Mary and Judy. They moved to Idaho and Utah were Leon worked for Chicago Bridge and Iron, later the family moved to Eureka.
Leon was called to serve our country during World War II where he served in the United States Navy, aboard the USS Fallon with a honorable discharge in 1945.
After the war he spent time working in the logging industry and construction work on many roads and the freeway in Humboldt County. Leon Rodeoed on weekends for 60 plus years. He enjoyed announcing rodeo's and gymkhana's and auctioneering, he was a volunteer for the Sheriff-Posse.
In 1971 Leon married Dee Denmark and reside in Cottonwood, California. He bought a truck & trailer and hauled livestock throughout the western states for many years.
After retiring Leon married Ona Lee Phillips in 1997 and lived in Blocksburg, spending their summers in Seeley Lake, Montana. When they got tried of traveling they built a home at the rodeo grounds in Garberville, California, here Leon spent his time in his large garden where they resided until his passing.
Leon is survived by his wife Ona Lee; his daughter, Mary Le Clair; sister, Dorothy Moore; two step daughters, Linda MacDonald (Fred), Carla Critchfield (Raymond); grandchildren: Mike Bandy, Linda Drum (Wes), Janet Anderson, Janele Baziuk, and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Geraldine Roberts; brother, Harold Lloyd Gerdis; daughter, Judy Tibbett and grandson, Larry Weiss. There will not be a service per Leon's request.
