He was born June 18, 1917, in Chesterton, Ind., to Jay and Mattie (Hineline) Bancroft. He attended the Chesterton schools and remained there until his induction into the Army in 1942. He served with the 3851st Quartermaster Corps in India and was in the first truck company to travel the Burma Road when it was opened. He then joined the 10th Air Force in India and later served in the 14th Air Force Flying Tigers on supply shipment drop missions over China. During his enlistment, he served overseas for three years and was awarded the distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.
Mr. Bancroft retired as a supervisor from the United States Steel Company in 1979 after 40 years of service. Upon his retirement he and his wife moved to Irons where they built a home. He was an active member of Covenant Community United Methodist Church in Baldwin, where he served as a trustee during the construction of the current church building and parsonage.
Albert loved sports, especially baseball and the Chicago Cubs. He coached men’s and youth church league baseball and basketball teams in both Chesterton and Irons.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15 at the Covenant Community United Methodist Church in Baldwin with Pastor Nelson Hall officiating. Those considering an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to Hospice of Michigan or the World War II Memorial Fund.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Vida Funeral Home in Baldwin.
