Arthur Hale "Art" Curtis was an American football player, coach, and gynecologist.
He was born on May 20, 1881 in Portage, Wisconsin, the son of Henry Hale Curtis and Madenia McNown Curtis. He received his BS in 1902 from the University of Wisconsin. He then served as the head coach at the University of Kansas in 1902 and at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1903 to 1904, compiling a career college football record of 17–10–1.
Arthur received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1905. He then interned at the Cook County Hospital. Having a keen interest in research, he continued post-graduate studies at Rush, then at Berlin and Vienna. He served with the american forces overseas in World War I.
In 1910, he became a member of the faculty at Northwestern University Medical School as Clinical Assistant in Gynecology, 1916 Associate in Gynecology, 1917 Clinical Professor of Gynecology, and 1924 Professor of Gynecology. In 1926 he became chairman of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, 1947 Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Curtis was awarded an honorary LL.D. by the University of Wisconsin in 1935.He served as presiding officer of the Institute of Medicine of Chicago, American Gynecological Society and the Chicago Gynecological Society.
Arthur's first wife, Mary died in 1926. In 1951 he married her sister, Floy.
He died of a heart attack in 1955.
