Services for Mary Elizabeth Wentz, age 86, of Leavenworth, KS, were held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Leavenworth. Burial was in Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Mrs. Wentz passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at her home. She was born May 31, 1918, in Chanute, KS, the daughter of Harry and Fay Butler (1890) Alleman.
She graduated from Morehead High School and from Pittsburg State Teacher's College in 1934. She received a master's degree in education from Kansas University. Mrs. Wentz taught high school home economics. She began in Junction City, then after WW II moved to Leavenworth, where she had lived for 59 years. She taught elementary school at Fort Leavenworth for 23 years.
She was involved with the American Association of University Women, Daughters of the American Revolution, Fort Leavenworth Education Assn., Leavenworth Teachers Assn., Leavenworth Historical Society and St. Paul's women's organizations.
Her husband was Ralph C. Wentz (1909-1987). Survivors include three sons, R. David Wentz, Prairie Village, Hugh Wentz and Mark Wentz, both of Lawrence; a daughter, Cynthia Wentz Richter, Westwood; a brother, H. Glen Alleman, Rochester, NY; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
