H. L. SCHMITZ SUCCUMBS, 80
Herbert Lucas Schmitz, brother of the late Mayor Eugene E. Schmitz, colorful figure out of the city's gaudy past, died at his home here yesterday. He was 80.
Mr. Schmitz was born January 10, 1873, in a building on the site where the Fairmont Hotel now stands. Though closely associated with the brother who rose from orchestra leader to mayor, Mr. Schmitz's name was never mentioned in the famed graft cases involving Eugene and political boss Abraham Ruef.
HELD CITY POSTS.
During Eugene's tenure as mayor from 1901 to 1907, Mr. Schmitz served first on the board of public works and then on the Park commission. After Eugene lost the mayor's post in the flurry of graft and corruption charges, the two brothers were associated in the insurance business. Mr. Schmitz, who resided at 340 Page Street, held numerous city jobs over the years until his retirement in 1946.
SURVIVORS.
Included among the survivors are Mrs. Schmitz's three sons by her first marriage; Don Brill, of San Francisco; Willmer G. Brill, of Colusa, and Leon Brill, of Salinas. Other survivors are two nieces, Sister Mary Isabel, O. P., of Stockton, and Evelyn Schmitz, of San Francisco. Rosary services will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Carew and English funeral home, 350 Masonic Avenue. A requiem mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
