A. Virginia Breslin, 94, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Altoona, passed away Monday at the home.
She was the daughter of John and Anna M. (Singer) Halloran. She married Bernard A. Breslin on May 1, 1948, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 2010, after 62 years of marriage.
Surviving are three sons: Patrick (Mary) of Bridgewater, N.J., Timothy of Mount Lebanon and Kevin of Herndon, Va.; two granddaughters: Azay and Kayla; as well as many beloved nephews, nieces and friends.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Grimme; and a brother, J. Clair Halloran.
Virginia was a 1936 graduate of Altoona High School. After graduation, she worked as a salesclerk and in the office at McCrory's in downtown Altoona. Later, she was a keypunch operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona. After the birth of her first child, she became a full-time homemaker.
She was an active member of St. Rose of Lima Parish after moving to the Eldorado section of Altoona in 1956, contributing to many spaghetti dinners and other church fundraisers. She was a member of the Catholic Sorority of Altoona and also was active in the Christian Mothers Guild and in the St. Rose of Lima PTA. She also volunteered at the Mercy/Bon Secours Hospital gift shop for more than 25 years.
Virginia was an avid reader and patronized the Altoona Area Public Library on a regular basis for decades. She also enjoyed singing, traveling and doing crossword puzzles. Additionally, she took pleasure in attending local theater and musical productions.
She downplayed her skills as a self-taught cook and baker but was well-known for her sumptuous holiday dinners, formidable pots of baked beans at family picnics and especially for her raisin cookies. Her wit and warmth will be missed.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 5514 Roselawn Ave. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
