As a young child, Tyler spent his time as all little boys do – playing, getting into trouble and caring for his puppy. Following in his father's footsteps, Tyler became an enthusiastic Boy Scout, first as a Tenderfoot then worked his way all the way up to Eagle Scout in 1933. He later took over as Scoutmaster of the troop his father started in Opelousas, LA. He earned the money and went with his troop by train to the scouting Jamboree in Washington, DC in 1937. He received several awards for scouting service over the years and was still receiving service plaques as late as 1998.

At age 19, Tyler began searching for his purpose in life. Graduating from Opelousas High School in May 1933 with a subsequent year of college, he wanted to be on his own and make a mark on the page-of-life that had his name inscribed at the top. His first known job was working at his father's insurance agency in Opelousas for 9 years, mostly selling life insurance. He progressed upward throughout his life by shear perseverance and genial personality.

Two years into this his first job, he attended a local social gathering and spied the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. He talked a friend into introducing him to her and immediately fell in love. On 5 July 1936 he married the quiet, petite Jewell McManus of Eunice, LA whom he loved more than life itself until his very last day on this earth.

Bio by Richard R. Lamson, his son.
