"Zelma Marie Harrison departed this life for eternal life on Tuesday February 8, 2005, after a long illness. Sixth of eight children, Zelma was born on October 9, 1952 in Kingston, N.Y. to Ella F. Lindsay and the late James Philip Lindsay.

Humble, godly, compassionate, detailed and persistent are just a few of the words used to describe Zelma. Graduating from Kingston High School in 1970 with a business major, Zelma went on to Ulster County Community College. Over the years Zelma was employed by IBM Corp., Bankers Trust and K-Mart. Zelma also worked with the Liberty Partnership Program because she felt it would have a positive impact on the young people. She loved children and was especially interested in their education.

On June 11, 1977, she married Erick C. Harrison. They have three children: Jay, Cedric and Odessa; and five grandchildren: Cherokee, DaMian, Jasmine, Jalynn and Jada. Zelma has a rich family history. She learned that having children and grandchildren played an important part in helping her to be what God intended her to be - a witness for Him, an example for them and an advocate for others.

In 1979, Zelma became a born again Christian and a woman of faith. She was a very active member of St. Clara Pointe of Praise, where her eldest brother is the pastor. She was a member of the Praise Team, the Voices of Praise Choir, Sunday School, Missionary Department, Women of Zion, Trustee Board and served as an assistant HOME (Homes Open for Ministry and Evangelism) group leader. Zelma often visited the sick and infirm. She also volunteered her time to work with the King's Kids. This gave her an opportunity to share her artistic talents. Zelma loved to color and sing. She enjoyed such hobbies as reading, writing, drawing, Scrabble and shopping at dollar stores. Zelma was also one of the original members in her nephew's gospel group, Shining Light.

Zelma actively involved herself in community affairs. She was an Election Inspector for over 30 years; one of the commissioners of the Human Rights Committee; a former member of the NAACP and a part of the Community Choir. She was an active member of the Parent Teacher Organization at John F. Kennedy School, while her own children were there. In 2002, she became a facilitator for Family Connections, a program sponsored by Kingston Cares. In 2003, the King's Kids honored her with their "Heroes in our Backyard" award for her work on behalf of children.

She served on the Kingston City School Board for over 10 years and in her last two terms served as the Vice President of the Board. Zelma believed that being elected to the school board was a mission ordained by God, and the reason for her long tenure. She was respected because of her willingness to stand on her convictions. At times, this required her standing alone and casting the "unpopular vote". Zelma was always the voice of reason. She made sure the needs of ALL students were taken into consideration by the Board. Throughout her tenure on the Board, Zelma challenged the district with the need for a more diverse faculty. Although her board position was time consuming and often stressful, Zelma often stated that she was "ready, willing and able to hang in there for a few more years."

Zelma was predeceased by her father and a sister, Mary Louise (Reyes) Torres.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Erick Harrison; two sons, Jay Alexander Lindsay and Cedric James Harrison; a daughter, Odessa Harrison; her mother, Ella Lindsay; one sister, Carol Ann Henderson and her husband, Burt; five brothers: The Reverend James Childs and his wife, Dorothy, Thomas Childs and his wife, Sherry, all of Kingston, N.Y., Ronald Lindsay and his wife, Nadine, of Raleigh, N.C., Anthony Lindsay and his wife, Julie, of San Mateo, Calif., and Gregory Lindsay and his wife, Laurie, of Schenectady, N.Y. In addition, she leaves her five grandchildren and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be Sunday February 13, 2005 from 7-9 PM in Riverview Baptist Church, 240 Catherine, Kingston, N.Y.

Services will be Monday, February 14 at 11:00 AM in St. Clara's Church of God in Christ, 150 Murray St., Kingston, N.Y., where Elder Jim Childs will officiate.

Burial will be in Montropose Cemetery.

Arrangements were made by Brutus W. Hodge Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Clara's Church of God in Christ Building Fund, or the Zelma Marie Harrison Scholarship Fund, 150 Murray St., Kingston, NY 12401."
