Her parents were Albert and Adah Muth. She had a business degree from Syracuse, NY and entered the U.S. military in World War II, enlisting in the WAVES division the the U.S. Navy. From 1943 to 1945 she was assigned to Administration, reaching the rank of Yeoman First Class. She continued to serve her country in many locations after the war as an Executive Secretary in the U.S. State Department of Diplomatic Service. Her husband was Robert Carl Ode, one of 52 Americans held hostage in Iran for 444 days. He was also a Foreign Service Officer.
