Wife of Donald Wesley Bailey.
There have been many ways of people recording my Great Grandmother's name.
I decided to go back to the census and other records to figure it out.
Here is what I found.
Born: 9 Oct 1873 Bakersville, Mitchell, North Carolina
15 June 1880 Census Eliza Conley
13 June 1900 Census Liddia Bailey
29 April 1910 Census Eliza Bailey
14 January 1920 Census Lida Bailey
16 April 1930 Census Lidia Bailey
4 May 1940 Census Lydia
Death Certificate, died 23 July 1959,85 yrs old, Name: Lidia Conley Bailey, info by daughter Mollie Bailey Byrd.
Eliza 1880 + 1910 = 2
Lidia and Lydia 1900 + 1920 + 1930 + 1940 + Death Certificate = 5
I was told her name was Eliza Lydia Conley Bailey and that she was known as Ida. I have not found any record of the Ida yet.
I was at her funeral on 25 July 1959. I was 11 years old.
It seemed to me she was raised up in the casket by her back. As a curious child I asked why she was raised up.
I was told she had severe diabetes and died from complications and a huge hole in her back that would not heal. It made me sad.
I was told she was a midwife and a good one, with the local women depending on her to help with the birthing.
She had twin daughters Nola and Iola "Lola"
She delivered her grand daughter, my Aunt Fairy and her twin brother(not named)but he was dead at time of delivery.
She delivered her grand sons, my Dad and his twin brother, and named my Dad Donald Julis (Donald after her husband, my Daddy's Grandfather)and his twin James Ulis.
My Uncle Jim kept his whole name, James Ulis (her brother's name was James), but Daddy didn't like the Julis and when he went into the service you had to have a second name, so he took his Grandfather's whole name Donald Wesley.
Lydia's daughter, my Great Aunt Lola, told me Great Grandmother Lydia had a bad temper if she was crossed, and that she knew how to stand her ground, get a lawyer, no matter who it was, trying to get the best of her.
I think of her as a very independent woman, ahead of her time.
God Bless you Great Grandmother.
