Nancy raised Ruth and Mary Kershaw in Chicago, Illinois after her sister (Elizabeth E. Middleton Kershaw) died in 1897. The father of the girls (Joshua Dawson Kershaw) married again in 1900 and moved, leaving the girls in Nancy's lovng care. JD Kershaw also passed away in 1900.

There are numerous social articles in Chicago newspapers that reflect that Nancy was a wonderful mother. They all seemed very happy. Ruth even named a daughter after Nancy. By the 1930 census, Nancy was 75 and living with her niece, Ruth.
