Emil was born in September 1848 on the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, the son of Slow Bull and his wife. About 1872, Emil married a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe named White Mountain. She was born in November 1849, the daughter of Paints Himself Yellow and his wife. She was still alive, living in Pine Ridge, on July 18, 1931, when she filed for a widow's pension based on Emil's service as an Indian Scout with the U.S. Army subsequent to Little Big Horn.
Emil and White Mountain had seven children, all of whom were born on the Pine Ridge Reservation. They were:
Richard, born November 1874
Emil, born September 1877
Albert, born in 1879
Anna, born February 1883
Mary, born November 1884
Julia, born May 1890
Fanny, born May 1895
Emil Afraid-of-Hawk was with the Lakota at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, commonly referred to as "Custer's Last Stand". The Lakota considered this engagement to be the Battle of Greasy Grass, a term that they used to identify the meadows in which they were camped. Most likely, Emil was among the Oglala Lakota, who were led by the legendary Chief Crazy Horse.
