Walter Ellis Horton, Sr., age 86, of New Philadelphia, Ohio died peacefully early morning Friday, February 17, 2012, in his residence with his family at his side.
Born at Johns Run, Kentucky on July 27, 1925 Walter was a son of the late Watt and Letha (Adams) Horton.
He attended school at Hitchens, Kentucky and on October 16, 1945 entered into the United States Army. He was assigned to a Military Police Detail and stationed in France and Germany.
Upon his discharge, Walter began a 45 year career as a drilling foreman with the WJ Mott Core Drilling Company at Huntington, West Virginia.
On September 3, 1955, at Oakland Maryland he married the former Mary Jo Cooper and as a couple they reared one son.
Since 1955, Walter has been a member of the James T. Maxon American Legion Post #992 at Mount Morris, Pennsylvania. He enjoyed working in his workshop and gardening, playing cards and spending time with his family during holiday gatherings and caring for the family's beloved dachshunds, Lucky and Spencer.
In addtion to his wife of 56 years, Walter is survived by a son, Walter E. Horton Jr., and his wife, Sara Carlson of Stow, Ohio. and a grandson, Daniel Walter Horton and his fiance, Nichole Lyna Scarinzi of Cuyahoga Falls.
Two sisters, Ruth Ann (Bob) Sexton and Mary Loios Sexton; two brothers, Watt (Barbara Ann) Horton and Fred (Carol) Watson; a brother-in-law, Wetzel Thomas as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by a sister, Alene Thomas and a brother-in-law, Bill Sexton.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 19, 2012, from 1-3 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home and Crematory, 116 Second Street NE, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
Burial in the Cedar Grove Cemetery at Mount Morris, Pennsylvania.

They are buried in the Adams Cem., near Rt. 1, mouth of Johns Run, Carter Co., Ky., and the grandson of Elkanah "El Canor" Horton and Alice Lawson, both also buried in Adams Cemetery sometimes called the Johns Run Community Cemetery.
