In 1860 Beard was operating a store in Shreveport, when Louisiana seceded from the Union, he formed the first Infantry Company from the Shreveport area. The Shreveport Grays became part of the 1st Special Battalion and went to Virginia. Beard later returned to Louisiana and formed the 11th Infantry Battalion. This became the Consolidated Crescent Regiment with Beard as its Colonel. On April 8, 1864 Beard's command along with Gray's 28th Louisiana made the first charge against Banks at the Battle of Mansfield, the high-point of the Red River Campaign. Col. Beard was struck by a minie ball and killed. His brother removed his body from the field of battle, and in a borrowed wagon took him home some 15 miles up the road to his wife and two children, one of which was only 11 days old.
He was buried near his home in Kingston. His wife dedicated her life to the commemoration of the Confederacy; the U.D.C. chapter in Desoto Parish is the Kate Beard Chapter.
The Logansport Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is named for Colonel James Hamilton Beard.
