Suggested edit: John Avila ( March 15, 1932 - November 27, 2011 ) John (Pud) Avila of Raton passed away on Sunday November 27, 2011 at MCMC-LTC in Raton, NM. He was born on March 15, 1932 in Brilliant, NM the son of Andronico Avila and Dolores Martinez-Avila. John was born into a coalmining family. He began working in the Koehler mine after graduation from Raton High in 1951 until the mine was sold in 1953. In August 1954 John was drafted into the U.S. Army where he made his career of twenty years. In April 1975 he started back at the mine working for Kaisar Steel for 12 ½ years retiring in April 1987. John is a member of St. Patrick-St. Joseph's Catholic Church and life member of the VFW. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Louis Pete Garcia and Samuel Lee Garcia, one sister Eva Marie Garcia , and sister-in-law Mary M. Garcia all of Raton. He is survived by one brother Richard Avila and wife Billie Jo of North Carolina and sister-in-law Cruz Garcia of Raton. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive. Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will take place Friday December 9th at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick-St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 10:00 a.m. with Father Daniel Balizan as the celebrant. Funeral arrangements for John (Pud) Avila are under the direction of the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home of Raton.
